Stages of a Panic Cycle

Phase 1: Bodily Sensations

Most panic loops begin with an unexpected physical sensation — a racing heart, tight chest, breathlessness, dizziness, or tingling. Because it feels unusual, your mind jumps to the worst conclusion: “Am I in danger? Is something seriously wrong?” That alarmed reaction sets the stage for panic.

Phase 2: Panic Attack

As fear builds, the body’s fight-or-flight system kicks in. This survival response is useful in real danger but overwhelming when triggered by fear itself. Adrenaline surges, your heart races even faster, and the confusion quickly escalates into a full panic attack.

Phase 3: High Anxiety

Eventually, the panic wave fades, but you don’t feel “back to normal.” Your body is still flooded with stress chemicals, leaving you shaky, tense, and on edge. Hours later, you may still feel uneasy, overly alert, and anxious about every small body change.

Phase 4: Fear of Fear

The memory of the attack lingers. You start to fear the possibility of another one, avoiding situations or scanning your body for signs. This constant watchfulness keeps your body tense, which creates more sensations — and soon, you’re right back at Step 1.

While everybody reacts differently to panic, these are four general steps that might occur when an event or certain information triggers a person’s panic mode — whether or not that person is diagnosed with anxiety.
